SOS.

This past Saturday Dave and I joined 75,000 of tree-hugging, globally responsible, rock-and-roll fans at the US installment of The Concerts for the Climate Crisis: LiveEarth. How do you measure nearly 10 hours of live music?

How about our seats? Our assigned seats were pretty good. After the first song, we upgraded ourselves to seats 29 rows from the field. Of course we thought we’d be asked to leave within an act or two. We stayed there for the entire show. I don’t know if Dave and I have ever sat in our assigned seats at a concert. Concert Karma.

How about Alicia Keys joining Keith Urban doing an outstanding Gimme Shelter, that at the same time channeled The Stones, The Sisters of Mercy, and The Harlem Gospel Choir. What a voice. And Keith Urban was not hard to look at.

How about AFI’s rendition of Ziggy Stardust? The influence of David Bowie on today’s music is felt throughout AFI’s entire set, and the sets of many other performers.

How about Dave Mathews talking about growing up in South Africa and the differences in consumption he has seen in his travels.

Or John Mayer, the ever humble, getting even better by the day singer-songwriter. Mayer re-named his should be a campaign song Waiting for the World to Change to Waiting for all of us to Change. The line “when they own the information, they can spin it all they want” took on a different meaning in a world where many still dispute global warming. There were planes flying overhead (illegally, no doubt) with the message “Don’t Believe Al Gore.”

And how about Grammy Award Winning Rock Star and Academy Award Winning Songwriter Melissa Etheridge. Truly a highlight of the day, both because of her amazingly intimate stage presence and her message. She talked of global warming, the war, our Dear Mr President, and discrimination. She challenged the crowd to start asking coworkers “are you awake” when it comes to what’s happening in the world today.

Of course, there was Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, Fall Out Boy, KT Tunstall, The Police, and my choice for headliner, Roger Waters. What a treat. I know I'll write more about this day-- the many emotions and great performances, and more on the adventures of Dave and I in NYC.
